News: Andrea Kihlstedt Shares Lifetime Lessons in Fundraising on the 'Ask Allison' Podcast

Capital Campaign Pro co-founder Andrea Kihlstedt recently joined Allison McElroy on the Ask Allison podcast for a wide-ranging conversation about what decades in fundraising have taught her about donors, capital campaigns, careers, and the importance of genuine human connection.

In the episode, A Lifetime in Fundraising: Lessons from a Fundraising Pioneer with Andrea Kihlstedt, Andrea reflected on how fundraising has changed since the days when donor information was kept on index cards, while making the case that the fundamentals of strong fundraising remain remarkably consistent.

One of the central themes was the growing use of technology and automated personalization in donor communications. Andrea and Allison discussed why efficiency should never come at the expense of authentic relationships, particularly when working with an organization’s most important donors.

The conversation also turned to capital campaigns and Andrea’s longstanding belief that organizations should be directly involved in conversations with their donors. She discussed the limitations of traditional consultant-led feasibility studies and why empowering nonprofit leaders to speak with donors themselves can strengthen relationships and better prepare organizations for a campaign.

Key topics included:

  • What has changed in fundraising over the course of Andrea’s career, and what hasn’t
  • Why authentic donor relationships matter more than artificial personalization
  • How technology can help fundraisers without replacing genuine human connection
  • Why Andrea believes traditional feasibility studies have significant limitations
  • The value of nonprofit leaders speaking directly with major donors
  • Why mentorship is so important for newer development professionals
  • How fundraisers can recognize when an organization or role is no longer the right fit
  • Andrea’s philosophy on making the “third quarter” of life especially productive and meaningful

Andrea also shared candid advice for fundraising professionals thinking about their own careers, including the importance of recognizing when a stagnant or unhealthy work environment is taking too great a toll.

At Capital Campaign Pro, Andrea’s philosophy of putting relationships at the center of fundraising continues to shape how we help organizations prepare for capital campaigns. Strong campaigns are built through honest conversations with donors, engaged organizational leaders, and the confidence to build relationships rather than outsource them.

We’re grateful to Allison McElroy and the Ask Allison podcast for the opportunity to share Andrea’s perspective and lessons from a remarkable career in fundraising.
